Coachella Bans Marijuana, Despite It Being Legal In California
The drug was made legal in California on January
Coachella won’t allow marijuana use on site this year, despite the drug now being legal in the festival’s home state of California.
The ruling comes after marijuana was legalised in California on January 1 2018. Despite the state-wide ruling, local jurisdiction still has final say, and the city of Indio – home of Coachella – has opted to keep the drug illegal.
While Coachella is held on private property, Coachella’s website’s Q&A section outlines the ban, writing: “Sorry bro. Marijuana and marijuana products aren’t allowed inside [the festival]. Even in 2018 and beyond. If that changes, we’ll update this answer.”
The world-famous festival, which is held in the grounds of the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, will take place across two weekends in April, with the first weekend of the festival taking place on April 13-15. The second Coachella weekend will be held a week later, from April 20-22.

Last week, organisers revealed Coachella’s huge 2018 line-up, with The Weeknd, Beyoncé and Eminem confirmed as headliners.
Elsewhere on the bill are high-profile slots for the likes of SZA, HAIM, Migos and Tyler, the Creator. Coachella will also welcome performances from the likes of St. Vincent, The War on Drugs, David Byrne, alt-J and ODESZA across its two weekends.
